First aid certification is often a requirement for those working in high-risk industries like construction, healthcare, sports, and education. To obtain first aid certification, individuals must complete a nationally accredited first aid training course delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
While first aid certification doesn’t technically expire, it has a limited validity period depending on the type of certification. We’ve outlined the different validity periods for first aid certifications below.
How Long Is First Aid Certification Valid For?
According to SafeWork Australia, first aid certification should be renewed every three years. Participants are considered to be first-aid certified upon completion of the respective first aid course.
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
The HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course covers a broad range of first aid techniques to address anaphylaxis, burns, venomous bites, fractures, dislocations, sprains, open wounds, choking, and asthma.
First aid certification for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is valid for 3 years from the date of issue.
HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting
The HLTAID012 course covers first aid techniques specifically designed for infants and children within a childcare or school setting. Early learning educators and staff, as well as those working with school-age children outside of school hours, are required to hold HLTAID012 qualification.
First aid certification for HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting is valid for 3 years from the date of issue.
HLTAID009 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
The HLTAID009 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation course covers the application of CPR for unconscious casualties who are not breathing. Individuals learn the correct techniques for providing CPR, as well as when it should be applied.
First aid certification for HLTAID009 Provide CPR is valid for 1 year from the date of issue.
Is First Aid Certification Valid Across Different States?
Yes, first aid certification issued by a Registered Training Organisation (such as The First Aid School) is considered valid across all states in Australia. If you have completed an accredited first aid course in New South Wales, your first aid certification will be recognised by the government and workplaces in other states.
When renewing first aid certification, you do not need to attend first aid training with the same original provider. You only have to complete the respective first aid course with a registered training organisation.
Why Does First Aid Certification Have a Limited Validity Period?
First aid practices evolve over time – progression in the healthcare and medical industry can result in changes to existing first aid techniques. The purpose of the validity period is to ensure that individuals with first aid training are kept up to date with the latest first aid practices.
It’s also common for individuals to forget first aid techniques without practice. Refresher first aid training allows individuals to reinforce their skills and stay prepared for emergencies.
How to Refresh the Validity of a First Aid Certification
SafeWork Australia recommends that individuals and workplaces arrange for refresher first aid training before the end of the validity period. To renew first aid certification, simply attend and complete the same first aid course to reset the validity period for another 3 years.
